SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WHEC) – One of the greatest players and the leading scorer in Syracuse basketball history, Lawrence Moten, died at age 53 on Tuesday.
For four seasons on The Hill, Lawrence Moten gave opposing teams headaches.
Nicknamed ‘Poetry in Moten,’ the Washington D.C. native came to Central New York and became a star virtually the moment he stepped on the court.
After averaging 18.2 points per game as a freshman, Moten went on to have three more incredible seasons, scoring, 2,334 career points. That still ranks first on the Syracuse basketball list and ninth in Big East hoops history. When Moten graduated, he was atop the ranks in points scored in Big East contests.
His teams never went far in March Madness – only making it to the second weekend once in 1994, losing to 1-seed Missouri in the Sweet 16. But they were always talented teams. In fact, Moten shared a backcourt with current Orange head coach Red Autry and played on teams with Rochester native John Wallace.
While Moten was arguably the best pure scorer in SU history, he was underrated in other parts of the game. His 215 career steals rank seventh in program history and 197 threes – before the three-point shot skyrocketed – is still ninth best. Moten was also second-best on the team in assists per game from his sophomore to his junior seasons and averaged 4.9 rebounds per game throughout his four years.
Moten went on to play professionally in the NBA and other leagues and eventually found his way back to upstate New York. He had a brief coaching stint in Rochester with the Razorsharks, leading them to a championship in 2014.
