ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The group Reconnect Rochester is challenging Monroe County residents to go a week without driving to highlight the challenges that people without a car face and promote alternative transportation.
It’s part of the “Week Without Driving Challenge” started by disability rights advocates in Washington State. It runs from Monday, Sept. 29, through Sunday, Oct. 5.
Reconnect Rochester is asking people to track and report their non-driving miles. You can sign up here and get daily emails with guidance on how to get started and mini challenges to win prizes. Each day will have a theme to highlight different mobility options, including walking, biking, bus, and e-scooters.
The group says the average commute in Rochester is just over 4 miles. A quarter of Rochester residents and 11% of Monroe County residents travel daily without a car. Reconnect Rochester says reducing reliance on driving can lower transportation costs for households, reduce traffic congestion, and put less demand on roadway and parking infrastructure.
