Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on Monday for the Israeli strikes on Doha that killed Qatari serviceman and violated Qatari sovereignty.
In a call organized by President Trump, Netanyahu also said such a strike would not happen again.
Trump hosted Netanyahu for an Oval Office meeting, during which he held a trilateral call with Al Thani and Trump “expressed his desire to put Israeli-Qatar relations on a positive track after years of mutual grievances and miscommunications.”
During the call, which the White House described as a first step towards relations, Netanyahu “expressed his deep regret that Israel’s missile strike against Hamas targets in Qatar unintentionally killed a Qatari serviceman.”
“He further expressed regret that, in targeting Hamas leadership during hostage negotiations, Israel violated Qatari sovereignty and affirmed that Israel will not conduct such an attack again in the future,” according to the White House readout.
Al Thani “welcomed those assurances” and expressed that Qatar was ready to continue providing stability in the Middle East.
The Israeli military conduced a strike earlier this month against senior leadership of the militant group Hamas in Doha, killing five of the group’s members and a member of Qatar’s internal security force. Trump said at the time that he wasn’t happy with the strike and al Thani vowed to retaliate against Israel. Trump and al Thani met days later in New York.
Trump proposed on the call on Monday to “establish a trilateral mechanism to enhance coordination, improve communication, resolve mutual grievances, and strengthen collective efforts to prevent threats” and the two prime ministers accepted.
The three leaders also discussed a proposal to end the war in Gaza and Trump praised their prime ministers for their willingness to move towards peace, according to the readout.
