Martin O’Neill and Simon Jordan butted heads (not literally) when it came to debating West Ham’s handling of Graham Potter’s dismissal.
Potter was sacked by the Hammers on Saturday after a poor start to the new season, with Nuno Espirito Santo being announced as his successor just hours later.
Potter was dismissed with a record of six wins, five draws and 14 defeats from 25 games in charge of West Ham – a winning record of just 24 per centGettyThe Englishman was given his marching orders after just nine months at the London Stadium, having found himself under mounting pressure this season.
He left the Hammers second from bottom of the Premier League, having lost four of their opening five games, winning the other.
And the east London outfit moved quickly to replace Potter, unveiling former Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves boss Nuno as their new head coach shortly after his exit was announced.
But it was the events which unfolded just before this which have prompted criticism from many.
Potter was sacked by West Ham just hours after a press conference, before their clash away to Everton in the Premier League.
Undertaking his media duties, the 50-year-old had spoken about the pressure he was under, and admitted that results hadn’t been good enough.
It therefore came as a shock to many when the Irons then announced that Potter would be departing, and that Nuno would instead take the team for the Everton clash on Monday night, live on talkSPORT.
What did O’Neill and Jordan make of Potter’s sacking?
The club’s handling of their business managed to divide Jordan and O’Neill when they discussed it on talkSPORT on Monday.
Host Jim White asked the former Aston Villa and Celtic boss if it was disrespectful of West Ham’s hierarchy to let the situation unfold the way it did.
O’Neill replied: “Yes, absolutely. I definitely agree with that.
Potter’s press conference on Friday proved to be his last in charge of West HamGetty In his place arrives Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked by Nottingham Forest after defeat to West Ham earlier in SeptemberGetty“It’s absolutely right. If they know that he’s going to go on Saturday morning, why do the press conference on Friday?”
Jordan, laughing in the background, replied: “What? Was this human rights transgression, were they?
“Should we take ourselves out of the ECHR because Graham Potter had to do a press conference? It doesn’t matter.”
While O’Neill protested, ex-Crystal Palace owner Jordan added: “Do I think it’s an ideal way to behave? I think you’re probably right [that it isn’t].
“Why does respect or disrespect come into it? There was a press conference that needed to be had.
“The balancing act is – I wouldn’t have done it that way, but let’s try and work your way through the mind of [West Ham owner] David Sullivan, if anyone wants to duck into that murky little space, and have a look and say, what would you do?
O’Neill feels West Ham’s sacking of Graham Potter was disrespectful But Jordan scoffed at this, calling it an overreaction“You’ve got a press conference, what are you going to do?
“You haven’t quite got Nuno across the line, so you’re dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. You’ve got a press conference, do you want to give the world’s media an opportunity by going: ‘No Graham Potter today?’
Jordan later said: “What you do, is you say to Graham Potter, ‘You’re going to do a press conference’, and then you go, ‘I’m going to fire you, and I’m going to pay you for the next three years’.”
‘Let’s get context’
Jordan also claimed that O’Neill and others had overreacted to the Hammers’ handling of the situation.
He added: “Let’s get context – he went and did a bloody press conference, he wasn’t put in stocks and had thrown tomatoes at!”
Reiterating how he would have dealt with matters, Jordan insisted West Ham’s hierarchy were within their rights to dismiss Potter under controversial circumstances, as he failed to turn the tide at the London Stadium.
Jordan and O’Neill found themselves at odds over Potter’s dismissalThe ex-Brighton and Chelsea boss was appointed as Julen Lopetegui’s replacement in January, who had a failed five-month stint in charge.
But Potter’s spell was no more of a success, who departed east London with just six wins out of his 25 games in charge, causing the atmosphere at the club to turn sour.
Jordan summed up: “You know you’re gonna let the manager go, you know you have to pay this manager for doing a job that wasn’t particularly good.
“You take the lesser of two evils – you go: ‘What am I gonna do? I’m gonna do a press conference which people in their little ivory towers might consider to be disrespectful’.
“Disrespectful would be firing him trying to chip him for his wages, that’d be disrespectful.”
