The Northern Irishman had enjoyed a significant year in his career even before the weekend’s Ryder Cup, winning the Masters at Augusta back in April to become just the sixth male ever to have won all four majors, completing the career grand slam.
McIlroy has also won other notable events such as the Players Championship and the Pebble Beach event, but his role in this weekend’s Ryder Cup in New York has capped off a hugely momentous year for the world number two.
The 36-year-old contributed to 3.5 of Europe’s 15 points as they became the first team to win a Ryder Cup away from home since 2012, and lifting the trophy for a sixth time in his career.
McIlroy has never been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year before but did finish second back in 2014 in a year when he won both the Open and the PGA Championship, but was pipped to first place by Lewis Hamilton, who had just won his second Formula 1 World Championship, and his first for six years.

Chloe Kelly – 10/11 Rory McIlroy – 6/4 Hannah Hampton – 7/1 Ellie Kildunne – 12/1 Lando Norris – 14/1 Luke Littler – 40/1 Alessia Russo – 60/1 Joe Root – 66/1 Zoe Aldcroft – 80/1 Lucy Bronze – 80/1 Leah Williamson – 100/1 Ben Stokes – 125/1Despite McIlroy’s achievements this year, Lionesses star Chloe Kelly remains the odds on favourites to become the fifth consecutive female to win Sports Personality of the Year after playing a key part in both England and Arsenal being crowned European champions this year.
Three years on from scoring the extra-time winner to win England’s first major trophy, men or women, since 1966 in front of 87,000 people at Wembley, Kelly scored the winning spot kick in the penalty shoot out to make sure the Lionesses successfully defended their title of European champions back in July.
The Arsenal winger provided the assist for Alessia Russo’s equaliser in Sunday evening’s Euro final against Spain, having also scored a 119th minute winner in the semi final, and changed the game off the bench in the last eight match, providing an assist and scoring her shootout penalty.
Kelly’s Lioness teammate Hannah Hampton also has a shot for SPOTY in third favourite after her starring role in the victorious penalty shoot out to deliver a second consecutive European Championship title, saving two of Spain’s four penalties in the shootout.
The Chelsea goalkeeper also made countless crucial saves throughout the tournament to keep England in several tight encounters, also saving two spot kicks in their first penalty shoot out of the tournament against Sweden in the quarter finals.
England were crowned champions of the world on Saturday afternoon after winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham in a 33-13 win over Canada, which has seen star player Ellie Kildunne shoot into fourth favourite after scoring five tries in the tournament including one in the final from fullback.
