NEW YORK, Sept 25 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said that the growing recognition of Palestine by the international community is a historic step, but it should not remain symbolic.
He stressed the need to translate this momentum into the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
At a ministerial meeting in support of UNRWA on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Abdelatty stated that the agency plays a vital role in protecting Palestinian refugees and cannot be replaced.
He added that any attempt to weaken or undermine it, he noted, would inflict serious damage on the Palestinian cause. He called on the international community to ensure UNRWA has the financial and political backing required to continue its work.
The top diplomat also outlined Egypt’s efforts to support Gaza despite the closure of the Rafah crossing by Israel and restrictions on aid. Egypt, he said, continues to secure humanitarian assistance for Palestinians while working with Qatar and the United States to achieve a ceasefire.
Additionally, he noted that Cairo will host an international conference to implement the Arab-Islamic plan for early recovery and reconstruction, ensuring Palestinians remain on their land under a legitimate, unified authority governed by the rule of law. (MENA)
