A little over two weeks after Josh Giddey finalized his deal with the Chicago Bulls, the contract details have surfaced.
While we know the 22-year-old guard inked a four-year, $100 million deal, exactly how that would be distributed over the next handful of seasons has remained unclear. Initial estimates had Giddey’s contract starting at $22.3 million in 2025-26 before receiving the maximum 8 percent raise each of the following seasons. In other words, while Giddey’s average annual value sat at roughly $25.0 million over those four years, he actually was not set to make that amount until the 2027-28 season. This would also have him making $27.7 million in his final season with the team.
Nevertheless, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Chicago Bulls worked out a different kind of agreement with their future point guard.

I have given some rare praise to the Chicago Bulls’ front office for their handling of the Josh Giddey negotiations, and I guess I’m not done yet!
Giddey’s new contract will pay him a flat $25.0 million over all four seasons of his career (we have seen them conduct similar business with both Tre Jones and Patrick Williams). Chicago also avoided giving the guard a player option, meaning he will not hit unrestricted free agency again until the 2029 offseason.
Yes, deciding to go with a flat annual salary does mean that Giddey will be paid more than we expected over the next two years. But it also means he will be paid a good amount less than what we thought on the backend of the deal! In other words, instead of taking up an increasing percentage of the cap in the coming seasons, the Bulls will actually see Giddey take up less and less.
A deal like this may mean less cap space than anticipated next summer, but it gives the Bulls more financial flexibility long-term. This could end up helping quite a bit when it comes to retooling this roster around Giddey’s skillset or even moving off Giddey’s contract in the future. All in all, it’s a move that demonstrates quite a bit of foresight by this front office. I know … shocking!
I highly doubt this information will change the minds of those who have already criticized the deal. However, I found the $100 million to be a suitable number for a player who still projects to be an above-average starting guard in today’s NBA. So add in the fact that it is virtually a descending contract that gives the Bulls more wiggle room than expected, and I feel even better about where things ended up. This is the kind of proactive thinking that the front office has lacked in the pact.
Now … let’s see how they screw this up!
