DANSVILLE, N.Y. – A 175-year-old church in Dansville is sitting in ruins after much of the vacant building collapsed in July. The village began tearing down the building after it first collapsed but once they found it was full of asbestos, work paused. Now, they’re looking for the building’s rightful owner.
“Until we get that we can’t do anything with it because we know the cost is going to be just so much and so to protect our taxpayers we got to make sure what our responsibility is and who else’s it is,” said Dansville Mayor Barry Haywood.
Haywood says the town’s working with the last on-record owner, the Ministries of New York, but says they aren’t taking responsibility.
“We feel that we found the owner. It’s just whether they admit they are or if legally they are we don’t know,” Haywood said. “In fact, just a half an hour ago I met with our attorney to see where it stands at this point the attorneys are working back-and-forth.”
News10NBC reached out to New York Ministry Network and Archdiocese of New York to see if they had any insight, but neither responded.
Haywood says the asbestos doesn’t pose a risk to those nearby. News10NBC reached out to the state Department of Health to see what they say and will provide an update as soon as we hear back.
Regardless, Haywood is tired of looking at the rubble.
“Not know what to do, how we can do it, and also it’s an eyesore, it’s a beautiful park right there, nice homes around it, and they have to look at it, as we do, everyday,” said Haywood.
Haywood says because the rest of the building is newer, there’s no risk that the rest may collapse. He says the village already took care of that risk but he still wants this church demolished as quickly as possible.
Haywood says he doesn’t have an estimate on how much the demolition will cost, but if they can’t establish the building’s owners, it’ll come out of the town’s pockets.
