Syria on Trump and Erdoğan’s Table: Turkish President Calls Meeting “Fruitful” ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Donald Trump discussed several issues, including Syria, during their meeting in Washington on September 25.

The meeting took place in the US capital on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), attended by world leaders including Trump, Erdoğan, and Syrian transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa.

Trump raised the Syrian file during his talks with Erdoğan, hinting at new steps regarding sanctions. He stated that he would make an important announcement concerning Syria, without providing further details.

Trump noted that he had previously lifted some sanctions “to let Syria breathe,” acknowledging that the measures had been “very strong,” but added, “I believe we should have an important announcement today.”

Speaking to reporters on his return to Turkey on September 26, Erdoğan described the meeting with Trump as friendly, constructive, and fruitful. He said discussions included the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the Syrian issue.

The Turkish president accused Israel of taking steps that threaten regional peace, citing its attacks on Gaza and Syria, which he argued encouraged “terrorist groups.”

“I said before that Israeli aggression would not be limited to Palestine. It would have repercussions in our region. We have witnessed Israel’s reckless attacks in Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria,” Erdoğan said.

He added that Turkey sees Israeli attacks in Syria as attempts to undermine peace and stability efforts. He also confirmed that his team had discussed the latest developments with al-Sharaa at the “Turkish House” in New York.

Erdoğan described Syria’s participation in this year’s UNGA as highly important for the international legitimacy of the Syrian government. He stressed the need to rebuild Syria’s economy and infrastructure, with a particular focus on lifting sanctions.

“We are developing cooperation projects with Syria in all fields, always prioritizing Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.

According to Erdoğan, Turkey wants all Syrians, regardless of identity, to live side by side in peace, and he said the Syrian government shares this vision.

He vowed not to tolerate any attempt to undermine coexistence in Syria, declaring, “There is no place for terrorist organizations in Syria’s future, and there will not be any.”

The international community, he said, must take steps to ensure peace and stability in Syria and refrain from activities that encourage “terrorist groups” in the region.

Rapprochement with Syria

Relations between Syria and Turkey have warmed significantly since the fall of the former regime in Damascus, shifting toward political, military, and economic cooperation.

On August 13, the two countries signed a military cooperation agreement in Ankara between their defense ministries. The deal includes joint training programs, technical assistance, and specialized courses in counterterrorism, cyber defense, and military engineering.

Erdoğan’s Support for Syria

Erdoğan reiterated his full support for Syria during his address to the UNGA in New York, which opened on September 23.

He accused Israel of threatening “regional peace” through its attacks on Syria, Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon.

Erdoğan said Turkey had worked for 13 years to “draw the world’s attention” to events in Syria, noting that the injustices suffered by Syrians are now “forgotten,” while Syria itself has turned a page since the fall of the regime on December 8, 2024.

He pledged to continue supporting a united, safe, stable, and terror-free Syria, particularly against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).

The Turkish president thanked Gulf states “for their contributions in Syria,” adding that as stability takes root, “the winners will undoubtedly be the Syrians, the neighboring countries, and our entire region.”

Trump’s Meeting with al-Sharaa

Syrian transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa also met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York.

According to the Syrian presidency, the meeting took place during a reception hosted by Trump and attended by First Lady Melania Trump on September 25. Photos released by the presidency showed al-Sharaa shaking hands with Trump in Melania’s presence.

This was the second meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump, following their talks in Riyadh in May.

Qutaiba Idlbi, director of US affairs at the Syrian Foreign Ministry, told al-Araby TV that the meeting was cordial and focused on bilateral relations and lifting sanctions. He added that al-Sharaa and Trump agreed to hold another meeting soon in Washington.
