“Eating grapes supports hydration because they’re mostly water and contain electrolytes, like potassium,” says Wong. To her point, between 80 and 89% of grapes are water. Especially if you struggle to drink enough water, integrating hydrating foods like grapes into your diet can be beneficial.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself having better poops when you start eating grapes regularly. Wong explains that they’re a good source of soluble fiber (which dissolves in water, forming a gel-like substance that slows digestion and promotes healthy gut bacteria) and insoluble fiber (which doesn’t dissolve in water and adds bulk to stool). This—along with the high water content in grapes, which helps food move through the digestive system—helps prevent bloating and constipation.

Registered dietitian Lee Cotton, RDN, says that grapes contain several types of flavonoids, a type of antioxidant that can help prevent high levels of chronic inflammation. “Grapes are rich in the flavonoids, resveratrol and proanthocyanidins. These ingredients are beneficial to protect cells from free radical damage,” she explains.

Wong also points out that grapes contain fiber, another nutrient that’s beneficial for heart health. A high-fiber diet is linked to lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
