Daily News football: Week 5 previews and predictions, Friday’s games ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

The games this week aren’t exactly ‘headliner’ material, due to most of the area’s top teams taking their bye weeks ahead of league play, which starts in October. However, the following games should lend good storylines to keep an eye on Friday night.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Saugus (4-1) vs. Valencia (4-1), at College of the Canyons

This Foothill League matchup is a traditional one, and the two teams are vying for league titles this fall. Saugus is coming off a surprising defeat to Hart last week, but will look to bounce back against a battle-tested Vikings program that has only one loss, that coming to Bishop Amat at home.

This game will highlight two good QBs in Valencia’s Brady Bretthauer and Saugus’ Jake Nuttall. Bretthauer has amassed 10 touchdowns in total passing and running, and Nuttall is up to 1,007 yards and 13 touchdown passes this season.

Tarek’s pick: Valencia

Ventura (3-1) at Newbury Park (2-2)

Newbury Park is coming off two straight losses to Pacifica/Oxnard and St. Pius before getting the convenience of a bye week to correct some things before taking on Ventura in a Ventura County showdown.

Brady Smigiel, the Michigan commit, has been intercepted eight times early this season. He has also thrown for more than 1,200 yards and 11 TDs, but the turnover numbers need to drop. Look for a re-focused Panthers team to make a statement Friday night at home.

Tarek’s pick: Newbury Park

Notre Dame (2-2) at Culver City (3-1)

Notre Dame is coming off a bye week, but got significantly more flashy with Tyran Stokes deciding to play football. Stokes is a 6-foot-8, 245-pound basketball player who is ranked the No. 1 player in the country for the 2026 class. Stokes is expected to make his debut at wide receiver and maybe defensive end for coach Evan Yabu on Friday.

“This is my last chance to be a kid,” Stokes said when asked why he decided to suddenly play football.

Tarek’s pick: Notre Dame. Stokes catches a red zone TD.

Foothills Christian (0-5) at Viewpoint (4-0)

It’s been a while since Viewpoint’s football program started 4-0 – more than a decade. The Patriots started 6-0 in 2014. QB Magnus Merriman has thrown nine touchdowns and just one interception through four games and running back Shane Anderson has more than 300 yards rushing with six touchdowns. Both are juniors, so maybe the winning football will stick around in Calabasas for a little longer.

Tarek’s pick: Viewpoint

Crenshaw (3-1) at Cleveland (1-3)

A good City Section matchup that will showcase great athletes on LA36 Friday night with City Section Hall of Famer Randy Rosenbloom on the mic calling the play-by-play.

Don’t let the records fool you, Cleveland has played a much tougher schedule, including two Southern Section opponents (Harvard-Westlake and Crespi). Moy Odebunmi is the star player for the Cavs at running back. He’s tallied 670 yards and nine touchdowns —six rushing, one receiving, one interception return and one kick return — so far this season.

Tarek’s pick: Cleveland
