The injury bug made its way into the Philadelphia 76ers’ practice facility on Thursday.
The organization announced that second-year guard Jared McCain has suffered a UCL tear in his right thumb. McCain sustained the injury during a workout, and he will now meet with specialists to discuss the appropriate next steps.
With that being the case, McCain’s early-season availability is officially in doubt. While they have yet to share how long the guard may be sidelined, it’s rare that news like this isn’t followed by an extended absence. Philly also doesn’t have much time before games tip off. Their regular-season opener is less than one month away, as they will face the Boston Celtics on Oct. 22.
The 76ers will also tip off the preseason on Oct. 2 as part of the NBA’s Abu Dhabi series.

The news is a tough blow for McCain, whose young NBA journey has already been halted by a significant injury. The former Duke guard only appeared in 23 games during his rookie campaign because of a meniscus tear that required surgery.
His return felt like a potential difference-maker for a 76ers team that hopes to contend in a wide-open Eastern Conference. While that may sound crazy when we consider his overall inexperience and age, McCain was well on his way toward a Rookie of the Year honor before his injury. He averaged an impressive 15.3 points on 38.3 percent shooting from long range in his limited action. The full expectation heading into this season was that McCain would return to a prominent backcourt role.
McCain’s absence also holds that much more weight when we factor in the 76ers’ other bumps and bruises. Both Joel Embiid and Paul George have struggled immensely to stay on the floor over the last handful of years. Embiid was held to 19 games in 2024-25, while George suited up for only 41 contests. The significant injury trouble led Philly to shockingly finish 13th in the Eastern Conference with only 24 wins.
Indeed, no team in the league has a greater range in where they could end up this upcoming season. This is why the rest of the East will have a close eye on how healthy their team is to begin the year. If several players are stuck in street clothes again, it could open the door for teams like the Bulls, Raptors, or even Hornets to have a better chance at a postseason slot than expected.
McCain’s injury continues an unfortunate pre-season trend for the NBA. Miami’s Tyler Herro recently underwent foot surgery that will force him to miss roughly a month, and Fred VanVleet is expected to sit out the entire season with a torn ACL. Of course, this all comes after a postseason that saw Damian Lillard, Tyrese Haliburton, and Jayson Tatum each tear their Achilles. Not great!
