ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A rally is planned for Thursday outside the Rochester City School District’s Central Office on West Broad Street over payroll issues that have impacted hundreds of employees.
Over 100 salaried teachers and around 700 hourly non-teaching employees went unpaid over the summer because the district faced challenges transitioning to Oracle, a new payroll company. News10NBC has been tracking payroll issues at RCSD into the new school year.
According to Rochester Teachers Association President Adam Urbanski, the biggest worry is that there seems to be no end in sight.
“Here is what worries most district employees: that there is no end in sight and that this will continue for months, if not years,” Urbanski said. “And every time we ask the district, when do you think this mess will be over? They keep saying, well, we hope next payroll.”
While many are now just having issues getting their benefits restored and corrected, like retirement accounts, union representatives say hundreds are still impacted by the transition to Oracle payroll.
Board of Education President Camille Simmons responded to News10NBC’s questions at 2:30 a.m. and said the superintendent will provide an update at Thursday night’s meeting. She could not give an exact number of how many teachers are still impacted.
Simmons confirmed that as of Thursday, the district has not received an active audit from the state. The board passed a formal resolution for an independent, third-party, external audit earlier this month.
“Well, the New York State Labor Department deals mostly with private sector employers. However, we have filed a charge, a lawsuit with the United States Department of Labor. They do have the authority, but government agencies aren’t always responding quickly,” Urbanski said.
Urbanski believes the next threat outside of teachers giving up on the district is parents pulling their students out of RCSD schools.
Rochester is not the only district facing problems with Oracle. Just last week, the Syracuse district’s pay was delayed due to the transition. News10NBC is also working to learn more about a North Carolina district that dealt with Oracle pay problems for years.
