BRIGHTON, N.Y. – Two student-run media organizations at Monroe Community College – the Monroe Doctrine newspaper and the WMCC radio station, have been suspended, raising concerns from one student about First Amendment violations.

News10NBC spoke with Leslie Greenwood, editor-in-chief of the college’s newspaper.

“Right now, there seems to be a big effort to not let these organizations continue. It seems to be a huge censorship issue,” Greenwood said. “Because [Monroe Community College’s] reasonings that they’re giving for this keep changing, and there’s not really much validity to any of the reasons that they keep alternating between.”

Greenwood explained that WMCC was suspended for not turning in attendance sheets, while The Monroe Doctrine faced suspension for missing mandatory Student Government Association (SGA) meetings last semester.

According to MCC’s SGA Constitution and By-Laws, all clubs and organizations must attend various training sessions throughout the year and maintain a list of members.

In a statement, MCC said the following:

“Monroe Community College (MCC) and its Student Government Association (SGA) remain dedicated to upholding the SGA Constitution and By-laws, including the standards required for clubs and organizations to maintain good standing. We actively promote student engagement through established policies and procedures in line with our mission, vision, and values.”

MCC did not specify which policies were broken.

“Whatever comes from the media shouldn’t have any influence from government,” Greenwood said. “And by them overstepping they’re not only violating First Amendment rights, they’re also losing the trust of the students.”

The Monroe Doctrine’s website is currently down, but Greenwood is working on an alternative student paper called The Monroe Maverick.

She is also striving to have The Doctrine reinstated before she transfers next semester.
