A man who University of Northern Colorado police say brought a gun on campus was arrested by Greeley police Wednesday, according to a post from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
Ephraim Debisa, 21, faces charges of trespassing and unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds. Debisa was released from jail earlier this month after he was found incompetent to stand trial and likely could not be restored to competency in two separate felony cases. At the time, Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams issued a news release saying a state law required him to release Debisa and warning the public of Debisa’s release, calling him a “potential danger to the community.”
“I knew this would happen. I am glad no one was hurt,” Reams said in the post about Debisa’s arrest Wednesday.
Debisa’s release from jail received national attention earlier this month when Elon Musk, the chairman of the social media platform X and a former advisor to President Donald Trump, said “This is insane” in a post on X in reference to Debisa’s release, and tagged Polis.
Polis replied on X, calling Debisa’s release “absolutely unacceptable” and saying the Weld County District Attorney’s Office and the Weld County Attorney’s Office should have used state law to keep Debisa in custody.
Debisa was charged in two separate felony cases in Weld County. In one, he was arrested on charges of first-degree assault causing significant bodily injury and second-degree attempted homicide. In the other, he was charged with first-degree burglary and felony menacing, according to a pair of affidavits for his arrest.
Following Polis’ post on X, Weld District Attorney Michael Rourke hosted a news conference explaining why state law required Debisa’s release and saying he and Polis had spoken about a need to change the laws to prevent future releases.
