In the series premiere, Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) was approached by the father of an Olympic candidate from Iran when they were in the studio at UBN for an interview and slipped her a note that read, "We want to defect."
Alex acted on the request. But in Episode 2, she’s accused of actually plotting the interview in order to make the defection possible. Something that, if true, could cost UBN its Olympics coverage, which would shut down the network – and there’s a so-called video of her to prove it.
“Trust, I would say, is our big theme this season,” The Morning Show executive producer Mimi Leder tells Parade. “Who can you trust? Can you trust what you’re hearing? Can you trust what you’re seeing with your own eyes? And what is the truth? With all deepfakes, it’s very hard to know what is real and what isn’t. And AI, of course, is very much at the top of many people’s minds.”
The subject matter keeps the show, which is set two years in the past, current and topical. Especially when Stella has been working on an AI project that has Alex speaking in 41 different languages. So, even though there’s a very real possibility that someone could have hacked the program, Alex still isn’t believed, which is interesting because later on in the season, we watch Stella interact with her AI as if it could really speak intelligently with her.

“Bradley left under very difficult circumstances,” Leder says. “Very few people know the truth about why she left. And Alex and Cory (Billy Crudup) are very suspect of why she’s back. Bradley is back for redemption. Definitely, she needs to redeem herself, and she’s got a great story to explore in this season.... The show deals with very real subjects in a very real way, obviously in our tone, through humor, and great drama with this extraordinary group of actors."
