A driver turned herself in to police and has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a pregnant woman crossing the street in a Chicago suburb over the weekend.
According to police, a soon-to-be mother was crossing a street near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Jackson Street in Waukegan around 9:30 p.m. Sunday when she was hit by a vehicle.
Police said they arrived at the scene to find 36-year-old Michelle Heidbrick, of Mundelein, unresponsive.
Officers performed CPR and Heidbrick was transported to Vista Medical Center East where she was pronounced dead, along with her unborn baby.
Family members said in a fundraising page for Heidbrick that she was 22 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

Then on Tuesday, authorities said the 49-year-old driver, identified as Rosalinda Vaca, of Waukegan, turned herself in.
Vaca told police she was driving her black 2016 Land Rover SUV in the area at the same time of the crash. She said she knew she hit something, but didn’t realize what until she learned of the crash involving Heidbrick.
Once she discovered what happened, Vaca turned herself into police and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, authorities said.
The crash remained under investigation by police Tuesday.
