The 36-year-old Adlington and husband Andy Parsons made the announcement Tuesday on Instagram, calling it a “small miracle” after she had gone through two miscarriages over the past 19 months.

“We questioned whether we wanted to share this news but we want to continue to be open and honest about our journey and be mindful of the struggles that others have had and continue to have,” Adlington said in the post.

Adlington added later that “While we are cautiously overjoyed, we carry awareness of the quiet struggles many face, and we send love to those hearts too. We know so many people are waiting for this kind of news.”

Adlington and Parsons have a two-year-old son, Albie, while Adlington also has an eight-year-old daughter, Summer, from her previous marriage with Harry Needs.

Adlington’s biggest accomplishment in swimming came at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, when she won gold in both the women’s 400 (4:03.22) and 800 freestyle (8:14.10) events.

Her time in the 800 free broke a 19-year-old world record held by former American great Janet Evans. After winning the 400, Adlington became the first British woman to win a swimming gold medal since Anita Lonsbrough in 1960.

Following her win in the 800 by more than six seconds over silver medalist Alessia Filippi of Italy, she became the first British swimmer to win multiple gold medals at an Olympics since Henry Taylor in 1908.

Adlington also won gold in the 800 free at the 2008 (short course) and 2011 (long course) World Championships, and gold in the 400 free at both the 2010 European Championships and 2010 Commonwealth Games.

At the 2012 London Olympics while under an added microscope of swimming on home soil, Adlington won bronze medals in the 400 and 800 freestyle. In the 800, she was beaten out for gold by Katie Ledecky, who then was 15 years old.

She retired from competitive swimming shortly after the London Olympics at age 23 to embark on a TV career, where she has served as a BBC swimming commentator since 2016.
