Reasons for Optimism on Cade Horton’s Back Issue ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

After carrying the Cubs for the last two months, Cade Horton’s back finally gave out. Ba dum tsss.

In all seriousness, Horton has been critically important to the Cubs since the All-Star break, performing as one of the best pitchers in baseball, and turning every fifth day into at least five strong innings from the starting pitcher. Most Cade days are win days.

So for him to exit early last night, in his final regular season start, necessarily inspires dread. The Cubs need him to start one of those first two postseason games – sorry for the pressure, rook – and thankfully that was at least part of the explanation for the pull in the first place.

“Cade was sick this week — we’ve had a couple guys sick — and he was coughing a lot,” Craig Counsell said after the game, per Marquee. “He noticed the symptoms on Sunday, Monday-ish — no effect throwing — and it just started to tighten up a little bit, so we pulled the plug on it. He just had symptoms on deep breaths. That’s what we feel like it probably is. We want to be extra careful.”

In other words, it doesn’t necessarily sound like something where Horton absolutely, positively could not continue pitching if he had to. Nor does it necessarily sound like something that is definitely going to linger into next week. We can keep our hopes high.

“I felt really good pitching-wise,” Horton said, per the Sun-Times. “I felt like I was hitting my spots, attacking guys. I really felt good. Just in between innings, started to get a little stiff, the breathing started to play a factor.”

Asked if he felt he had enough time to recover for next week’s start, Horton said, encouragingly: “For sure. I think that’s why we made the move we did tonight.”

So, there you go. One of those “precautionary” situations that really does sound precautionary. I expect we’ll get some updates on Cade Horton’s status later this week, including if and when he does his normal work between starts.
