NAPLES, N.Y. — A Naples Central School staff member who was placed on leave following social-media remarks made about the assassination of Charlie Kirk has resigned.
District Superintendent Kevin Swartz announced the staff member’s resignation in a message to the community Tuesday, posted on the district website.
“I am writing to provide an update regarding the disruption to the Naples Central School District community over the past few weeks. As of today, the staff member in question has resigned from the school district, and we consider the matter resolved. This has been a difficult time for NCSD, and I hope we can now return our focus to all that is positive within our district,” Swartz wrote.
Swartz added: “… There will always be moments where our emotions run high as events unfold locally, regionally, or nationally. In those times, I encourage us all to pause before reacting and instead embrace reflection, respectful dialogue, and activities that bring us peace. This is what we teach and expect of our students, and I’m optimistic we can model it ourselves. Our school, community, and country will be better for it.”
Naples was one of a number of area school districts where a staff member’s social-media comments about the death of Kirk — the conservative political activist who was assassinated Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University — created controversy. The Hilton district say sit addressed the issue with a staff member, while the Greece Central School District said an employee is facing “appropriate disciplinary action.” A Le Roy teacher was placed on leave for remarks.
On Sunday, protesters gathered outside Naples High School, incensed about the employee’s comments.
