Phil Taylor has called on Luke Littler to strike fear into his darts rivals before they are even on the oche.

However, the 16-time world champion is unsure how many Alexandra Palace titles the Nuke could retire with.

Littler is set to return to London as the defending champion after his win over Michael van Gerwen in January.

In doing so, he became the youngest world champion in the sport’s history but has some way to go before he matches Taylor’s tally.

The Power admits Littler could be the player to surpass his record haul, though, but his hopes depend on several factors.

Taylor was 29 when he won the first of his 16 world crowns, giving Littler an eight-year head start on the darts legend.

He would go on to retire in 2018 after losing to Rob Cross at Ally Pally in what was his 21st final.

Taylor was asked how many world titles Littler could win during an appearance on Stephen Hendry’s Cue Tips.

The 65-year-old told the snooker icon: “I think it depends on his work ethic really because it’s going to get harder.

“He’s going to get older and he’s going to have a family soon and things like that.”

Taylor continued: “You’ve got to have that name about you where they’re a bit frightened of you. People (are) frightened of you because you’re consistent, which seems to be intimidating people at the moment.

“Young Luke, he’s very, very good and the thing is with him, he doesn’t care what people think or say. (He’s) very level headed and he’s not money orientated.

“I think it’s very important when you’re that age to have good people behind you. His mum and dad are lovely.”

Littler’s meteoric rise began with a run to the final of the PDC World Darts Championship on debut as a 16-year-old less than two years ago.

He has since scooped over £1.5million in prize money to climb to number two in the world rankings behind Luke Humphries.

The teenager could still overtake his rival before his first world title defence in December.

Littler is set to defend his Grand Slam of Darts crown along with attempting to add the World Grand Prix, European Championship and Players Championship Finals to his trophy cabinet.

Littler’s plans for PDC World Darts Championship

He has already set his sights on Ally Pally, though, having made his intentions clear after he was beaten by Van Gerwen at the World Series of Darts Finals this month.

Littler became the youngest world champion in darts history in January at just 17AFP

Speaking in Manchester at the launch of a new Target Darts shop, he explained: “As the days are ticking by and the Worlds are shortly coming round, then it does start to get exciting.

“The first year was just new to me, I was just enjoying it. This year I’m also enjoying it. I’ve won a few titles.

“It’s the same old busy schedule. From about four weeks ago, up until the World’s, I’ve got two weekends off before my first game, so it’s very busy. It’s all preparation for the Worlds.

“Obviously I want to win the Worlds. All the players would look at the prize money but for myself, it’s just about going back-to-back.”

Littler will be aiming to scoop £1million by becoming the first player since Gary Anderson in 2016 to successfully defend their world title.

It would add to victories in the World Matchplay and UK Open this year to take his PDC titles tally to 17 in less than two years as a professional.

This Christmas’ tournament has seen the prize fund doubled to £5million, with a seven-figure payout on offer for the winner.
