ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester is doubling its fundraising goal for “BEE A Hero Day” on Friday, Sept. 26. The non-profit is partnering with News10NBC and 92.5 WBEE to raise $100,000 to support families with children receiving critical care at local hospitals.
“Last year, we tasked ourselves to raise $50,000. But the community stepped up and we raised over $75,000,” said Carolyn Birrittella, Senior Vice President of Business Strategy and Philanthropy at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester.
This year, the organization is setting a goal of $100,000.
“We have a very robust goal but we’re extremely optimistic – and it’s $100,000 this year, which we know we can do with the support of this generous community,” Birrittella said.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester offers so much more than just a free place to stay for families while their child receives critical care at the hospital. It offers a sense of calm and support during a challenging time.
“They’re greeted with a sense of calm. I’ve often heard the team say ‘we’ve got you, just breathe.’ And that is so beautiful, because at that point families really can only put basically one foot in front of the other,” said Joanne Ryan, President and CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester. “They’re in a safe place where their needs will be met so they can do the best they can for their child.”
The organization’s mission is to wrap its arms around the whole family when they need it most — from the 24-bedroom Westmoreland House to the family rooms at Golisano and Unity Hospitals, as well as multiple healthy snack carts and other programs.
“So while that journey is happening, the beauty of what we get to do is watch this family grow in their confidence in their care for their child, so that’s one of the highlights I think that the team really celebrates, and it’s a challenge because not everyone leaves with their child, so we know just how heavy this mission can be,” Ryan said.
Every donation helps provide lodging, food, transportation, and wrap-around support for families during some of the most difficult times of their lives.
“Any gift that’s given is helping to do that for families when they are going through some of the most difficult times of their life because they have a critical child in the hospital,” Birrittella said.
