Some promising news has been delivered to British swimmer Archie Goodburn, the 24-year-old who was diagnosed with inoperable brain tumors last year.
While in the past Goodburn’s primary treatment options included chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the hopes of slowing the tumors’ growth, the breaststroker now has a new option in the form of a daily tablet.
‘Vorasidenib’ is the first new treatment for Goodburn’s type of cancer in more than two decades, according to a report in The Times.
Vorasidenib is made by the French pharmaceutical company Servier and was just approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the UK’s medicines watchdog, for use in Britain.
Trials show vorasidenib more than doubles the time of progression-free survival, from 11 months to 28 months. (The Times)
The drug will now be submitted to the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (Nice), the health watchdog, to be rolled out on the NHS.
As part of a compassionate access program run by Servier, Goodburn has had access to vorasidenib for the past two months ahead of MHRA approval.
Of this new treatment, Goodburn stated, “Vorasidenib is revolutionary, it is an oral tablet you take once a day, with minimum side effects.
“Taking it means you no longer feel like you’re fighting a losing battle, it feels like you’ve got some say in the fight.”
The Edinburgh-based athlete continued, “We as brain tumour patients have no acceptable forms of treatment.
“No one is cured, everyone is left with a ticking time bomb in our brain. We need to welcome new treatments.
“In America vorasidenib is already the standard treatment. It would be outrageous if Nice didn’t approve it, as a developed nation we need to embrace these new therapies to keep up with other countries.”
Goodburn remarkably still trains at an elite level, hoping to make the Scottish squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“I still train 11 times a week. Vorasidenib has given me hope that I can compete in the Commonwealth Games. It is impossible to look too far ahead, and I have a scan every three months to see if the tumour is growing or laying dormant.
“The psychological stress of having a ticking time bomb in your brain is unbelievable. There’s not a second that goes by in your day where you don’t think about it.” (The Times)
Goodburn is the reigning Scottish national record holder in the 50m breaststroke, owning a lifetime best of 27.19 from the 2023 Aquatics GB Championships. Along with retired Olympian Ross Murdoch, Goodburn also owns the short course 50m breast national record at 26.26 from the 2023 European Championships.
