"[John] used to like to scare me a lot when I was little, because I was a little younger," Shooter explained on the podcast. "The Cashs' house was pretty big — I mean, I was little, so it wasn't as big as my memory."
"John Carter told me that they were dead people," he said. "That they had poured wax over or whatever and melted ... I was so scared to go to Johnny Cash's house."
Shooter Jennings Had a Sweet Relationship With Johnny Cash
Scary statues notwithstanding, Shooter was very close with Johnny growing up. Back in 2012, he told Channel Guide that he was the one who chose Johnny to be his godfather after his dad Waylon had a falling out with the man who was originally in the role.
"When I was 4 or 5 — I’m 33 now — is when The Highwaymen formed, so from a young age Cash’s family, Willie Nelson’s family, Kris [Kristofferson's] family and our family were out on the road traveling together and doing these overseas tours, so our families bonded," he said.
