The No. 23 Missouri Tigers are set for a huge early-season SEC test against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night, and who the Gamecocks will be starting under center is still very much up in the air.
Carolina’s star sophomore LaNorris Sellers has been dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion he suffered during the Gamecocks’ 31-7 loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores last weekend, and has been limited in practice as a result.
Reports surfaced on Thursday that Sellers had returned to practice, but there has yet to be an official decision made on whether or not he will be starting under center for Carolina against the Tigers.
Sixth-year Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz isn’t getting too caught up in who the starter at quarterback ends up being for the Gamecocks, though, as he explained Sirius XM on Friday afternoon that it’s just a “distraction.”
“I think that for us, worrying about who ends up playing quarterback is just a distraction,” Drinkwitz said. “Throughout the week, you attack the scheme. You don’t attack an individual player. I think for us we’re assuming that LaNorris is gonna be the quarterback, and everything we do is gonna be in adjustment off of if different.”

— College Sports on SiriusXM (@SXMCollege) September 19, 2025It’s clear that Drinkwitz isn’t letting his guys get too caught up in whether or not Sellers starts, but there’s no denying that this Carolina team is far more dangerous with him under center, even if the Tigers’ head coach isn’t admitting it.
It will be very interesting to see what Sellers’ status ends up come kickoff time, and what Missouri’s approach will look like if he is ultimately unable to take the field for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks’ offense.
