Lake County Sheriff's office addresses viral claims of ‘agreements' with ICE ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Lake County Sheriff’s office took to social media to address viral posts circulating claiming the office “just signed agreements with ICE.”

The office shared the viral post to its Facebook page saying it was “aware of inaccurate information circulating on social media.”

s claimed the sheriff’s office had reached an agreement with ICE to allow deputies to turn in individuals who have a detainer, or to hold them in jail for ICE to pick up.

“To be clear – Illinois law prohibits local law enforcement from holding individuals on ICE detainers or coordinating with ICE on immigration enforcement,” the sheriff’s office said in its statement. “The Sheriff’s Office has not signed any agreements with ICE. Our mission remains focused on public safety and serving all members of our community with fairness and respect.”

The rumors come amid heightened immigration enforcement action across the Chicago area, with several suburbs reporting recent arrests.

Other suburban police departments also shared similar messages to residents.

In Naperville, authorities wrote on Facebook that its their department “received several inquiries about reported immigration enforcement activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Naperville.”

“We are sharing this message to clarify the role of the Naperville Police Department,” the department wrote. “Immigration enforcement is the jurisdiction of federal authorities, and local law enforcement’s involvement is regulated by the Illinois TRUST Act. Our police department, by law, cannot assist with immigration enforcement activity and does not receive notification when ICE officers are going to be in Naperville. The Naperville Police Department is committed to providing police services to all members of our community. NPD’s primary responsibility is enforcing criminal laws, and our officers remain dedicated to that mission. Our officers do not ask about people’s immigration status.”

Meanwhile, in west suburban Broadview Friday, protesters clashed with armed guards at a federal immigration facility, resulting in tear gas being deployed and multiple people taken into custody.

Increased immigration enforcement operations began in earnest last week; and continued this week with both ICE and the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posting videos to social media of immigration raids.

The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have yet to provide firm numbers to NBC 5 Investigates on the number of people detained since “Operation Midway Blitz” began last week, but did not in their release Friday that the operation has resulted in “the arrest of hundreds of criminal illegal aliens.”
