2025 World Para Swimming Championships

September 21-27, 2025 OCBC Aquatic Centre – Singapore LCM (50 Meters) Meet Central Youtube Livestream Channel

The 2025 World Para Swimming Championships are set to kick off in just three days and will bring high-level, electric racing to Singapore’s OCBC Aquatic Centre for the second time this year. After an action-paced 2024 Paralympic Games, the first senior international meet of the new Paralympic cycle is sure to deliver for all seven days.

That’s due to the talent set to compete at the championships. Jessica Long, an icon of the sport, will be in Singapore, as well other decorated veterans like Maria Carolina Gomes Santiago. Then, there’s quickly rising stars like Alexa Leary and Olivia Newman-Baronius, as well as international newcomers like Katie Kubiak.

The field is packed, and here are five more female swimmers worth watching during the weeklong World Championships.

Jiang Yuyan, China (Classification: S6)

Jiang Yuyan made a statement last year in Paris at her second Paralympic Games. She was the most decorated Paralympian in Paris at just 19 years old, winning seven gold medals, including five from individual events. The accomplishment earned her Laureus Award—one of the most prestigious in sports—for Sportsperson of the Year With A Disability.

This year, Jiang will try to back up her Paris performance with a big medal haul in Singapore. She’s got a busy schedule next week as she’s entered in the 100m backstroke S6, 100m freestyle S6, 400m freestyle S6, 50m freestyle S6, and 50m butterfly S6. Add in relays, and she’ll be racing almost every evening.

Jiang is no stranger to the World Championship stage either, she already owns 11 medals from her appearances at the 2019 and 2023 World Para Swimming Championships.

Individual Event Schedule: Day 1 – 100m backstroke S6; Day 2: 100m freestyle S6; Day 4: 400m freestyle S6; Day 5: 50m freestyle S6; Day 7: 50m butterfly S6

Yip Pin Xiu, Singapore (Classification: S2)

It’s always worth keeping an eye on a legend when their racing in their home country. Yip Pin Xiu, 33, is already a Para swimming legend and further cemented that legacy last summer at the Paralympics. Not only is she the world record holder in the 50m and 100m backstroke S2 events, she’s also the three-time defending Paralympic champion in both, claiming her third-straight title in both races at the 2024 Paralympic Games.

She also won 50 backstroke S3 gold at the 2008 Paralympics, which represented Singapore’s first ever Paralympic gold. While Xiu has tested other events—even winning the 50m freestyle S3 at the 2010 World Championships , the sprint backstroke events are truly where she shines. They are the only individual events she’ll race at these World Para Swimming Championships, so make sure you’ve looked at the schedule if you want to watch Singapore’s star be greeted by the roar of a home crowd.

Individual Event Schedule: Day 3: 100m backstroke S2; Day 6: 50m backstroke S2

Alice Tai, Great Britain (Classification: S8, SM8)

Alice Tai had a triumphant return to the Paralympic stage in Paris. She won six medals in La Defense Arena, earning a complete set that included two golds (50m freestyle S8, 100m backstroke S8), one silver (400m freestyle S8), and two bronzes (100m butterfly S8, 200m IM SM8). All those successes came after withdrawing from the 2021 Paralympics due to injury and returning to the sport after having her right leg amputated below the knee in 2022.

But for Tai, the season after her most successful Paralympics has been a challenging one. As she prepared to head to Singapore, Tai shared on Instagram that “this season has been one of the hardest for [her] (even harder than the amputation one),” due to her coach’s retirement. She shared that she considered pulling out of the championships, but ultimately decided to compete after rediscovering her joy for training.

Tai is entered in all the events she medaled in at the 2024 Paralympics except the 400m freestyle.

Individual Event Schedule: Day 2 – 100m backstroke S8; Day 3 – 100 butterfly S8; Day 4 – 100 freestyle S8; Day 5 – 50m freestyle S8; Day 6 – 200 IM SM8

Leanne Smith, United States (Classification: S3)

Leanne Smith took a break from the sport after winning four medals at the 2024 Paralympic Games. She made sure that everyone knew she was back racing in April at the Indianapolis stop of the World Para Swimming Series, where she broke three world records on the first day of competition.

The 36-year-old already owned all three world records, but her 100m (1:26.76) and 200m freestyle S3 (3:15.48) bettered marks she swam two years ago. “It’s something I didn’t expect, but switching up my training and taking a solid four months off from swimming was refreshing and much-needed,” she told U.S. Paralympics at the meet. “[These records] are emotional for me, but they reinforce that you don’t have to be doing what the person next to you is doing, and that working within your limits is okay and it’s enough.”

Individual Event Schedule: Day 2 – 150m IM SM3; Day 4 – 50m backstroke S3; Day 5 – 50m freestyle S3; Day 6 – 200m freestyle S3; Day 7 – 100 freestyle S3

Danielle Dorris, Canada (Classification: S7, SB7, SM7)

Danielle Dorris, the world record holder in the women’s 50m butterfly S7, has separated herself from the field in her signature event. She was the first woman to break 33 seconds in the event and first took over the world record during the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics. She won the event’s gold later in the meet, which marked her first Paralympic title.

Dorris successfully defended that title in Paris after tying her world mark at the Canadian Paralympic Trials. She’s been on a tear so far this season, breaking multiple world records at the Canadian Short Course National Championships which she told Swimming Canada was a “nice confidence boost before going to Worlds.”

Individual Event Schedule: Day 1 – 200m IM SM7; Day 4 – 100m backstroke S7; Day 5 – 50m butterfly S7; Day 6 – 50m freestyle S7
