A 34-year-old man suspected of vandalizing a business in San Pedro died after Los Angeles police officers used force to take him into custody earlier this week, authorities said.

Harbor Division officers responded to the 700 block of West Channel Street, near Gaffey Street, about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, on a report of a robbery in progress at a convenience store, police said.

Arriving officers saw Roger John Nielsen vandalizing the business, police said. When officers attempted to speak with Nielsen, he allegedly grabbed a piece of plexiglass from a sign he had damaged.

Officers used a 40-millimeter, less-lethal projectile launcher; Nielsen was hit in the upper body, police said. Officers approached Nielsen, who quickly placed himself on the ground, face down, and took him into custody.

Nielsen was taken to a hospital but died, police said.

An officer suffered a dislocated finger and was treated and released from a hospital, police said.
