Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) is ahead of Republican New Jersey gubernatorial candidate, Jack Ciattarelli, by 8 percentage points, according to a new poll.
The Quinnipiac University poll found Sherrill garnering 49 percent support to Ciattarelli’s 41 percent among likely voters, with a Libertarian and socialist both seeing 1 percent of support. Four percent were undecided and 2 percent “refused” to answer.
Sherrill and Ciattarelli both recently put out their first general election television ads for the upcoming governor’s race. Ciattarelli locked down the Republican nomination this year for a second time after a close loss to Gov. Phil Murphy (D) in 2021. He is seeking an upset over Sherrill, the Democratic nominee.
New Jersey has a history of leaning Democratic, but Republicans in recent years have found success in state-level races and encouragement in GOP strides made during the 2021 governor’s race and 2024 presidential race.
Murphy, meanwhile, had a job approval rating of 48 percent from likely voters, while 44 percent disapproved, in the poll.
“Mikie earned the trust and support of voters because they know she is a fighter — from her time serving as a U.S. Navy pilot to her role flipping a longtime Republican congressional district,” Murphy said in a statement posted to the social platform X earlier this summer.
“As Governor, she will fight to lower costs, protect our freedoms, and build an economy that works for every family,” he added.
The Quinnipiac poll took place from Sep. 11 to 15, featuring 1,238 likely voters and plus or minus 3.9 percentage points as its margin of sampling error.
