It’s been eight years since the Cubs got to pop champagne during a normal, regular season (2017). It’s been seven years since the Cubs made the playoffs in a non-pandemic year (2018, game 163). And it’s been five years since the Cubs clinched a postseason berth at all (NL Central champs in the pandemic season). So I suppose it was fitting that today’s playoff-clinching win over the Pittsburgh Pirates was one of the slowest, longest Cubs games of the season!
In fact, at 3 hours and 17 minutes, today’s game was the fourth-longest Cubs game of the year, and two of the games ahead of them went into extra innings.
But, hey, it was worth the wait!
We have so so so much more to discuss about what comes next — remember, the Cubs still have something to play for (specifically, the top Wild Card seed) — but, for now, it is okay to exhale and enjoy the moment. They did it. They made the playoffs, and that’s something to be very happy about.
As for today’s game, there was a lot to like. The Cubs got out to an early lead, enjoying big games from Michael Busch, Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ, and Moises Ballesteros, though almost everyone contributed in one way or another. And even after they gave up their big early lead, they clawed it back and added on another four runs to make things comfortable.
We’re going to have to have a nice, long discussion about Matthew Boyd and the Cubs playoff rotation, as he was once again a problem. But I don’t think we need to spoil this nice moment with that. Just know it is coming. Not good.
Today’s Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game award could legitimately go to a lot of players. But for me, it’s gotta be Aaron Civale, who came in and delivered three scoreless innings of work with just one hit allowed, providing space for the Cubs to reclaim and then preserve the lead. He was great.
That feels good, my friends. Cubs win. Cubs sweep. Cubs clinch.
