You want a bad update or a good update first?
I’ll go with a bad one. Because it’s POSSIBLE it won’t be that bad. We just don’t know yet where things are going.
I’m talking, of course, about Kyle Tucker’s calf. It was a little tight. Then it was kinda feeling something. Then he was about to play. Then he didn’t. Then he went on the Injured List. Then – today – the end of a minimum stint came up and there’s zero expectation that Tucker will actually be activated today, or even necessarily all that soon.
Tucker did some running again pre-game yesterday, but still felt pain in the calf.
“It’s not really where I want it to be, which isn’t ideal,” Tucker before the game, per Marquee. “I’m just trying to get back to feeling at least as close to game-ready as possible to get out there. Really all I want to do is just play baseball.”

We’ve heard that he can hit and throw, so I suppose he’s staying reasonably sharp during his now-extended absence, but we can’t make any useful predictions on just when he might return. At this point, the playoffs are where there is paramount importance, and I’d be in favor of being ultra-conservative – the worst thing would be for Tucker to get back, only to make things worse, and then be done for the year.
Of course, the pressure is at least slightly amplified by the continued absence of Seiya Suzuki, who has been sick for days now. Although he’s with the team this week in Pittsburgh and could appear, Craig Counsell didn’t make it sound like Suzuki was especially close to being full go (Marquee). Instead, when a guy has been this sick (we don’t know what with), it can be hard to get back to full speed and full strength.
The timing of Owen Caissie’s collision with the Wrigley Field wall is all the worse, of course, because he’d be taking these starts. It just sucks to have all three guys out at the same time, though the Cubs are fortunate to have Willi Castro and Moises Ballesteros available to take starts (and Kevin Alcantara available for the bench).
Meanwhile, the news on Daniel Palencia is much more hopeful.
He’s been out with a shoulder issue, which you would normally expect to be at least a month+ for a pitcher, but the guy already threw off the mound yesterday and is scheduled to do so again tomorrow (Marquee). We don’t quite know the intensity level there, or whether his performance is impacted by the shoulder issue (i.e., it’s possible that the ability to throw again will precede full effectiveness), but if there aren’t any setbacks, this trajectory is absolutely putting the end of the regular season back on the radar.
I expect the Cubs are going to want to see Palencia facing hitters before they would consider him for a key postseason role, but the good news is that Iowa plays through the weekend. So there’s a CHANCE Palencia could see an appearance there this weekend if he were feeling incredible and if the Cubs really wanted to force the issue. Pretty hard to project such an accelerated timeline like this, but the fact that it’s even possible is crazy.
