‘Chicago, we've arrived:' ICE border patrol chief posts message signaling new operation ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

As reports of increased immigration enforcement across Illinois continue, border patrol chief Gregory Bovino, who recently led ICE efforts in in Los Angeles, posted to social media early Tuesday morning, saying “Operation at Large” has arrived in Chicago.

“Well Chicago, we’ve arrived!,” a message posted to X by Bovino said. The message was accompanied by a video of what appeared to be border patrol agents walking and driving through parts of the city and suburbs.

“Operation At Large is here to continue the mission we started in Los Angeles—to make the city safer by targeting and arresting criminal illegal aliens,” the post said.

Department of Homeland Security security Kristi Noem was also in Chicago Tuesday, overseeing an ICE operation, according to the DHS.

The new developments come days after DHS announced another immigration enforcement campaign, “Operation Midway Blitz,” was set to launch in Chicago. Last week, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement posted a photo on social media, showing an Immigration Customs Enforcement vehicle with the Chicago skyline behind it.

“CHICAGO: a sanctuary city that attracts and protects criminal illegal aliens to the detriment of law-abiding citizens,” the post read. “In an ICE-led operation, we are here to remove these dangerous public safety threats from American communities.”

According to authorities, an ICE facility in suburban Broadview, and the Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago were both set to help house processing and staging for the operation, which could last as long as 60 days.

Over the weekend, immigration enforcement activity was observed in West Chicago, with Illinois Sen. Karina Villa posting a video to social media calling out who appeared to be masked ICE agents.

“These masked individuals came upon people with the color of my skin and picked them up,” she stated. “One of them was in a van. There was about 13 people, including a minor. One was at a grocery store, an apartment complex, and someone simply walking on the side of the street. This is why we have gathered here today to talk about and show the strength of this community, this immigrant, beautiful community.”

Last week, a man was shot and killed and an ICE agent was injured in Franklin Park while agents were conducting “targeted law enforcement activity,” authorities said.

According to a statement emailed to NBC Chicago by an Immigration Customs Enforcement spokesperson, officers attempted to stop a vehicle, but the person resisted. The person then attempted to drive the car into the arrest team, striking an agent and “subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene.”

The spokesperson said the agent, “fearing for his life,” discharged his weapon and struck the driver.

Activists in Chicago’s well-connected immigrant rights network say there’s been a noticeable uptick in immigration enforcement agents in recent days, deepening the dread in communities already fearful of the large-scale arrests or aggressive tactics used in other cities targeted by President Donald Trump.

Calls to an emergency hotline to report sightings of immigration officers have increased in the past week. One recent day the tally topped 500, though the calls included repeat information, mistaken reports and anti-immigrant harassment.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who has objected to any federal intervention, told reporters Monday that it was clear that immigration operations were ramping up around Chicago.

“ICE has been gathering its agents. It has taken them longer than I think they anticipated,” he said. “I expect that they now have more people on the ground and will effectuate their plans to an even greater degree.”
