The chemistry built up in the ballroom doesn't always last in the real world, but that doesn't mean every showmance is doomed. Sabrina Bryan was Mark Ballas' first dancing partner on DWTS. The pair were favored to win the season but were shockingly eliminated in Week 6 of Season 5. American Pie actress Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough really impressed judges with their Vietnamese Waltz during Season 6, but it didn't lead to a Mirrorball Trophy. (The pair finished 7th). However, it did lead to a year-long romance after the season wrapped. Hough tweeted to confirm the split in 2009, saying "we love and care about each other very much and will remain friends and in each others lives."

Ballas' dalliance with Sabrina Bryan didn't stop him from looking for love in the ballroom again. He and gymnast Shawn Johnson danced all the way to the winner's circle of Season 8. They also dated quietly behind the scenes and reportedly had a nasty breakup. When Johnson returned for All-Stars Season 15, she was paired with Derek Hough while Ballas danced with Bristol Palin.

While Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff knew each other before joining the DWTS cast (on Seasons 2 and 3 respectively), their romance blossomed because of the show. They started dating after Smirnoff's split from Mario Lopez and got engaged on New Year's Eve 2009. However, they never made it down the aisle. The wedding was called off nine months after the engagement. Both dancers competed on multiple seasons of the show post-breakup.

8. Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd
Maybe things didn't go too far with James and Peta because Peta's heart really belonged to Maks. Peta and Maks dated for a year in 2012 after working on the show together, and then reunited in 2014. The second time was the charm because the couple tied the knot in 2015 and are still married today. They have three children together.

While there have been a lot of breakups between pro dancers and their celebrity partners, Kym Johnson and Shark Tank's Robert Herjavec prove there is hope that a ballroom relationship can lead to lasting love in the real world. The pair met while competing together on Season 20 in 2015. They were married a year later and welcomed twins in 2018. They are still together.

11. Amber Rose and Val Chmerkovskiy
Rapper and model Amber Rose was actually partnered with Val's brother Maks for Season 23, while Val was partnered with Season 23 winner Laurie Hernandez. Despite not having hours of rehearsal together, the two developed a mutual attraction and dated for five months after the show wrapped, but it wasn't meant to be long-term.

Prior to dating Amber Rose, Val had been in an on-again-off-again relationship with fellow pro Jenna Johnson. After things with Val and Amber Rose went south, Val and Jenna started dating again. In 2017, the pair announced that they were back together. They got married in 2019 and had their first child together, Rome, in 2023.

Their son, Matteo Artemovich, was born a year later and the duo got married in Paris in 2022. However, the marriage was short-lived. Technically, Cheryl Burke and Boy Meets World star Matthew Lawrence didn't meet on the show, but they had a DWTS-adjacent relationship. She was partnered with his brother Joey Lawrence in Season 3, which is how they met. They originally dated for about a year in 2007, and then reunited a decade later in 2017. The couple got married in 2019, but filed for divorce a few short years later. The split was contentious, with the couple having to go to court to settle who would get custody of their French bulldog (Cheryl won).

Social media influencer Alexis Ren and dancer Alan Bersten are another pro and celebrity couple that tried to give love a shot outside of the show. The pair made great moves on the dance floor, but their romance only lasted a few months once the show wrapped.

Despite the speculation, including a kiss shared between the two on the dance floor, the TikTok star confirmed in a postseason interview that he had a girlfriend. The two have since unfollowed each other on social media.

Following their run, the two became an official couple, dating until officially breaking up in April 2025. Nader has since said that she had caught Savchenko cheating on him by going through his phone.
