The excitement for Blackhawks fans this weekend was supposed to be the prospect showcase games in Minnesota. But then the Hawks went and announced a three-year extension for goaltender Spencer Knight on Saturday.
The fact that Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson is locking up more pieces around Connor Bedard with smart contracts shows fans (and Bedard) that the Blackhawks are staying on plan. If there’s anything we can confidently say this front office has been consistent with, it’s staying on plan. The Knight extension is just the latest tidy piece of business from GMKD.
Davidson has signed 16 of the 38 players he has drafted since becoming the permanent general manager of the Blackhawks, and Frank Nazar became the first Davidson draft pick to sign a second contract earlier this summer.
With the addition of Russian free agent Stanislav Berezhnoy and extension for Knight, the Blackhawks have three goaltenders signed for at least the next two years. That does not include Drew Commesso, who has one year left on his entry-level contract, or Adam Gajan, who is still in college.
However, the Blackhawks have a lot of other business to consider in the coming months — including the next contract for Bedard. It’s also important to note that the Blackhawks currently have 41 of their 50 available contracts committed. They have room to add more players from junior/college to their obligations in the coming months. That flexibility is important to keep in mind.
Here’s what the Blackhawks books look like the next two years with players who will hit either restricted or unrestricted free agency, beginning with the one piece of unfinished business this summer still.
