If you were hoping to see the Washington Commanders slow down the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night, you weren’t in luck.

Packers Roll to 2-0

The Packers made things miserable for the Commanders on Thursday night, cruising to a 27-18 win at Lambeau Field. For Washington, it looked a lot like January’s playoff loss to the Eagles — overwhelmed at the line of scrimmage and unable to get their young quarterback into rhythm.

Green Bay’s front, led by Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary, constantly collapsed the pocket. Jayden Daniels never had the time to scan the field, let alone attack deep, and even his usual escape routes were cut off by linebacker Edgerrin Cooper spying him.

Defensively, Washington did a solid job bottling up Josh Jacobs, but Green Bay turned to its tight ends to great effect. Tucker Kraft found open spots all night and finished with six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. Losing running back Austin Ekeler to an Achilles injury and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. to a quad injury only made matters worse for a Commanders team that already came in thin at key spots.

Washington’s special teams actually gave them a boost — with Deebo Samuel’s 50-yard kickoff return and strong coverage units setting the offense up with short fields. But the Commanders managed just one touchdown on those opportunities, while kicker Matt Gay missed two long field goals. Afterward, Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn admitted the team lacked the “finishing” he wants to see, while players like guard Brandon Coleman pointed to missed adjustments up front as the difference.

Packers Lose Jayden Reed

The Commanders weren’t the only team dealing with a significant injury from Thursday night’s contest. Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed fractured his collarbone in Thursday’s win over Washington and will be placed on injured reserve, coach Matt LaFleur said today.

The injury happened on Green Bay’s opening drive when Reed landed hard on his right shoulder after a catch that was nullified by a holding penalty. Though sidelined for the foreseeable future, the team expects Reed to return later this season. Already dealing with a foot issue since camp, Reed’s absence further tests the Packers’ receiver depth with Christian Watson also out until at least Week 5.

Derrick Henry Responds to Delpit’s Trash Talk

Divisional matchups are always fun. A little bit of trash talking is expected. Ahead of Sunday’s matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, Cleveland safety Grant Delpitt delivered the first dose.

“Not hard,” Browns safety Grant Delpit told reporters at Thursday’s news conference when asked how hard it is to bring Ravens’ running back Derrick Henry down.

The message was related to Henry following Baltimore’s practice on Thursday.

“We’ll see on Sunday,” Henry said.

Henry is coming off a 169-yard performance against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 and a 1,921-yard season in 2024 with Baltimore. Henry would be near the bottom of the list of guys to fire up for me on Sunday. Despite Henry’s recent stretch of success and Baltimore’s heavy favorite line heading into Sunday, Delpit didn’t seem concerned, saying “Whoop-de-do” to the 12.5 point line that favors Baltimore.

As Henry said on Thursday, I guess we’ll see on Sunday.

Extra Points

The New England Patriots have ruled out cornerback Christian Gonzalez for this weekend’s matchup with the Miami Dolphins. Gonzalez’s hamstring injury also kept him out of the Pats’ season opener. According to a press conference transcript from the Patriots PR department, New England defensive lineman Keion White has also been ruled out. White is dealing with an undisclosed illness. The Bills will have running back James Cook and wide receiver Keon Coleman this Sunday against the Jets. On Wednesday, Cook was added to the injury report with a hamstring injury, but has since been removed. Coleman (groin) was also removed from the injury report today. Atlanta will get wide receiver Darnell Mooney back from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss Week 1. ICYMI: An update to the Friday Bears injury report.
