Pelicans Season Ends, Rizzo’s Place, Front Office Searches, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Rays will come to Wrigley Field having lost five of their last six, and having seen their slim playoff hopes crater to just about nothing. Let’s hope that collapsed their spirits and they won’t put up a fight this weekend …

The thing about a three-game playoff series is that it can end very quickly. Hopefully the Cubs Low-A affiliate Myrtle Beach Pelicans getting swept out of the Carolina League playoffs isn’t a foreboding sign for their parent organization. The Pelicans put together one of the most ridiculous second halves of professional baseball in the Cubs’ system in a very long time and came into the playoffs as good and hot as any team … but they lost the first two games of their three-game series and that was that. Playoffs over. Season over.

— Columbia Fireflies (@ColaFireflies) September 12, 2025 After yet another loss, the Mets now have just a 1.5-game lead over the Reds AND Giants for the final Wild Card spot (just one game in the loss column). A bit from Cubs.com and Nico Hoerner on Anthony Rizzo’s return to the organization tomorrow, and why he holds such a special place in our hearts:

‘Hoerner has pointed to the fact that Rizzo — who was acquired by the Cubs prior to the ‘12 season — was the rare player who debuts amid a rebuild, blossoms into a star and realizes the dream of World Series glory. The current Cubs second baseman has always admired that aspect of Rizzo’s career, while hoping to enjoy a similar experience.

“He was there for every bit of it,” Hoerner said. “It’s just part of why I think fans really gravitated toward him and why it was so meaningful for him, too. … His ability to be significant in one place and kind of a steady force throughout different parts of a team’s arc is incredibly cool. And the relationships that he built in the clubhouse, along with friendships he had on the team and things like that, it’s just so hard to get that in sports where there’s so much turnover every year.”’

In addition to the Nationals, who are looking for a new top baseball executive, we’ll also have the Orioles and Red Sox looking for number twos. Each of Mike Elias and Craig Breslow, respectively, are reportedly looking to hire a GM under them. A stunning fall for former top Blue Jays prospect Orelvis Martinez, who was a top-100 type just last year when he made his big league debut in June … and immediately got popped by a PED test. Back at Triple-A this year, his performance has been sufficiently miserable that the Blue Jays decided to DFA him to open up a 40-man spot. That’s about as swift as a promotion-then-punt can get for a former top prospect, and although Martinez is still just 24, you do wonder about the relationship between the PED situation and his performance fall-off. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s disappointing season got worse – he tore his ACL, and now he will be out until mid-2026. A little Sammyversary, celebrating the new Cubs Hall of Famer:
