A small plane crashed into Lake Michigan after leaving Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport Thursday, leading to a rescue effort in the water, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said three people were rescued after the aircraft went into Lake Michigan near Wind Point, just off the coast of the Milwaukee near the Racine area. All three were wearing life jackets and no injuries were reported, according to NBC affiliate TMJ4.
Chicago’s air traffic control notified the Coast Guard of the incident around 12:45 p.m., prompting the Coast Guard to deploy a 45-foot response boat and a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Traverse City, Michigan.
The rescuers managed to pull all three survivors from the downed Cesna aircraft.
“The aircraft has fully sunk and is deemed to not be a navigational hazard,” the Coast Guard reported.
Flight N121JB took off around 12:17 p.m., according to data from FlightAware, which showed the plane experienced a dramatic drop in speed and altitude about 12 minutes into the flight.
