Initial Reaction to the Big Josh Giddey Payday … and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

Open the windows. Play the music. Dance in the streets. Josh Giddey Watch is over!

It took 1,725 hours, but the Chicago Bulls and their 22-year-old point guard finally came to terms on a new four-year contract. The deal will net Giddey $100 million, meeting halfway between his initial demands and the Bulls’ initial offer.

IT’S OVER: Josh Giddey Inks New Four-Year Deal with Chicago Bulls All things considered, I think it’s safe to say the reaction to Josh Giddey’s new payday has been mixed. Those on the more skeptical or frustrated side have often referenced the Bulls’ immense leverage. With a market that dried up months ago, there is a case to make that they could have squeezed Giddey toward an even cheaper deal. Reports surfaced early on that they were sticking with an offer that had a $20.0 million AAV, only for news to leak last week that they upped things to roughly $22.0 million a year. Now, we know they went up by a total of $5.0 million a season, and I can understand why that feels like a loss. However, why are we ignoring the fact that Giddey still settled for significantly less after months of holding the same negotiations? Also, let’s not forget that the qualifying offer was still sitting there on the table. It may not have been as strong as any card the Bulls had in their hand, but it still carried some weight. Watching Giddey accept that deal and thus gain full control of his future could become a serious problem, especially with so many teams expected to have meaningful spending power next offseason. Losing him for nothing in a year, or having another team run up the price tag even more, would have been a far worse outcome. Above all else … why worry about $25.0 million a year? It may not be chump change in the NBA, but it sure isn’t some kind of astronomical number. The Bulls gave a still-developing starting point guard the 78th-highest-paid contract in the NBA. The Ringer’s Top 100 has Giddey as the 80th-best player in the NBA. NBA 2K26 has Giddey as their 69th-best player. I’m not claiming that those rankings are gospel, but I think they do help exemplify how Giddey’s talent compares to the rest of the league. And, well, the money is kind of right on point! If anything, the Bulls deserve some credit for holding their ground. Whether it be Jalen Suggs, Immanuel Quickley, or Jordan Poole, Giddey’s camp had plenty of contracts to point to as an example of his worth. This is especially true when we consider that Giddey arguably played better than all three last season. Yet, the Bulls convinced him to accept a good chunk less! I’ll take it. The Bulls have opted for a youth movement and must take a chance on at least a couple of guys. Giddey is a far safer gamble at $100 million than Patrick Williams is at $90 million. Likewise, this is an organization that has been in desperate need of a true point guard for years on end. They have repeatedly failed to solve the position, and they have now locked in a player who many view as one of the best pure passers and creators in the league. Particularly when we consider the development of forwards like Matas Buzelis and Noa Essengue, finding someone who can put them in positions to succeed is essential. Giddey can be that someone. Look, we can all agree Giddey is far from the perfect player. But he isn’t making All-Star money! It’s a completely fine and acceptable deal for a guy who has at least one elite skill set and continues to refine his game. There is A LOT to be critical about when it comes to the decisions the Chicago Bulls have made over the years, but this isn’t one of them. For what it’s worth, Steph Noh over at Sporting News gave the Josh Giddey contract a C+, and I encourage you to read his explanation here. If I had to settle on a grade, I’d probably land on a solid B. This is good value for a player with Giddey’s potential, and I also believe he doesn’t have to improve that significantly for it to be a pretty movable contract, if needed. Both Alex Caruso and Josh Giddey have now signed four-year deals with their new teams. Bags secured!

— Bleacher Nation Bulls (@BN_Bulls) September 9, 2025 ICYMI: The Chicago Bulls added a new name to their training camp roster this week. While it’ll be nearly impossible for him to earn a roster spot, he could come in handy for putting some pressure on Matas Buzelis and Not Essengue. Ben Johnson was far from perfect in Week 1. Luis takes a closer look at how the new head coach needs to improve. A Cubs legend officially announced his retirement. Re-live his best moments with Brett.
