Last week, the NCAA Football Oversight committee voted to move to 1 transfer portal window (beginning Jan. 2). According to ESPN, FBS coaches “voted unanimously” to support this proposal earlier this year during the American Football Coaches Association convention. Despite this, one of the country’s most notable head coaches is staunchly against the change.
On Tuesday afternoon, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day took a stand versus the timing of the new transfer window. His opposition came during his Tuesday press conference, where he claimed, “the majority of Big Ten coaches” share his sentiment on the topic.
I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. In the conversations we had with the Big Ten coaches, I think the majority of them agree — I just don’t quite understand how… teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they’re still getting ready to play for games. It doesn’t make any sense to me. I know the calendar is funky, but I know that the Big Ten and Tony Petitti has been working hard, because he doesn’t believe it either. The coaches in the Big Ten had a lot of long discussions about that and tried to work through the different windows, but I don’t agree with it being in January.
Day’s ire seems more focused on the time period of the window than the window itself. As the coach of a program that believes it will still be playing each year when the window opens, his frustration makes sense. Fortunately for him, the new window hasn’t officially been put into effect for the 2025-26 season yet. If he can gather enough supporters for his case, it’s possible a new proposal will brought to the table and the current one will never be implemented. But he doesn’t have much time; voting to implement the new window must take place before Oct. 1.
