Broncos sign former Cowboys RB Deuce Vaughn to practice squad ...Middle East

Sean Payton has had plenty of success with gadget backs throughout his 18-year NFL career, from Darren Sproles to Alvin Kamara. He’ll now have the chance to develop another intriguing name in Denver.

The Broncos have signed former Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn to their practice squad, Vaughn’s agent Jovan Barnes confirmed Tuesday morning. Vaughn, a Kansas State product and 2023 sixth-round pick, worked out for the Broncos last week.

There isn't an immediate corresponding roster move, as the Broncos are planning to promote QB3 Sam Ehlinger to the active roster again for Week 2's trip to Indianapolis, a source told The Denver Post. That leaves the organization with one open PS spot remaining, and Vaughn will step in.

In late August, Payton told reporters it was "different" for Denver to not carry a practice-squad back, even with four on the active roster.

"It was more about, let’s make sure that group of 16 are guys that we feel strongly about developmentally, or strongly about coming in and playing, as opposed to just filling the quota at each position," Payton said then.

The Broncos now fill that quota with the 5-foot-6 Vaughn, who's rushed 40 times for 110 yards and caught 10 passes for 58 yards across parts of the last two seasons in Dallas. Vaughn, 23, has been a preseason darling for the Cowboys for a few years.
