ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Attorneys are scheduled to give their opening statements on Tuesday in the trial of Taquida Hendrix, accused of working with her sister to intentionally set a fire that killed a 5-year-old boy in Rochester.
Police say the boy wasn’t the target. Her sister, Tikayla Hendrix, and another man named Roy Chambers both pleaded guilty to second-degree arson in late August.
The fire started around 2 a.m. back in July 2024 in a house on Portland Avenue. The fire killed Malakai Stovall who was home with a babysitter at the time. Prosecutors say the sisters used a flammable substance to ignite the front porch.
The trial is taking place in Monroe County Court. For Tikayla Hendrix and Chambers, their sentencing is set for Sept. 29.
