Maksim Trotsenko, a Russian native of Kamchatka, the peninsula in the far east of the country, will join up with Auburn’s squad in January this year. Initially slated to join this fall, a visa delay will see him join a little later, as the team will be ramping up for SECs.
A 21-year-old breaststroke specialist, Trotsenko brings some underrated speed to Auburn. He has some strong long course best times from the past two years, where he has been a multi-time finalist at Russia’s National Championships. His personal bests in both the 50 (26.98) and 100 (59.92) breast are some of the strongest in the NCAA for next year, and he should give the Tigers a stellar 1-2 punch alongside transfer Uros Zivanovic, a Serbian native who comes in from Georgia Tech.
As a comparison, Zivanovic was 51.53 last season as he qualified for NCAAs in his freshman season, and has a long course best of 1:01.64 – nearly two seconds slower than Trotsenko. That could see the Russian make a splash especially on Auburn’s relays, an area where they were particularly strong at NCAAs in 2023 and 2024.
The two should also be excellent training partners, and should add significant depth in an area where Auburn struggled last year. They had no scorers at SECs other than the now-graduated Henry Bethel, who finished 18th in 52.32. They ha no swimmers break 52 seconds in the 2024-25 season.
Trotsenko’s Best LCM Times (With SCY Conversions):
50 breast: 26.98 (23.40) 100 breast: 59.92 (51.21)Trotsenko’s 100 converts to a rapid 51.58, which would have been on a par with Zivanovic’s best time and fast enough for a 6th place finish at SECs, as well as being just over a tenth outside of scoring at NCAAs.
He had a breakout at the Russian National Championships in 2023, aged 19, hacking a second off his best time in the 100 to break the 1:00 barrier en route to placing 2nd in prelims. He was slightly slower last year as he went 1:00.31, but shaved just over a tenth off his time on the 50 to dip under 27 seconds in 26.98. He has multiple sub-minute relay splits to his name as well, posting a 59.56 in 2023 and 59.91 in 2024.
Auburn finished 8th out of 11 teams at SECs last year, only scoring around half the points in 2025 (554.5) that they scored in 2024 (1104) when they finished 2nd. They had been on a rapid rise through the first three years of head coach Ryan Wochomurka‘s tenure, but had some big losses last summer. With the #9 recruiting class this year, they look to still be firmly on an upward trend.
Although he will not arrive until January, Trotsenko is a member of a strong recruiting class for the 2025-2026 season. He is joined by #14 Luke Bedsole, BOTR Maston Ballew, BOTR Mach Schumann, Ari Azrad, Luke Waldrep, Uros Zivanovic and fellow internationals Daniel Krichevsky, Abdalla Nasr, Ivan Tarasov and Australian diver Ben Wilson.
