ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed an executive order allowing pharmacies to administer COVID-19 vaccines to anyone who wants it.
It comes after the Food and Drug Administration said it’s limiting the updated COVID shots to people who are 65 or older or have other health problems that make them more vulnerable to severe illness. During a Senate committee hearing, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced criticism for his efforts to pull back on COVID shot recommendations. Hochul spoke about her executive order.
“To have the federal government say that only people over the age of 65, they don’t even recommend it for expectant mothers anymore, to not cover children and family members, I don’t understand that,” Gov. Hochul said. “I don’t understand why you won’t let families have the choice to protect their children’s health. That’s what this is about.”
Pfizer’s vaccine will also no longer be available for any child under 5 as the FDA is revoking its emergency authorization for the age group. The American Academy of Pediatrics offered its own recommendations for kids, saying annual shots are strongly recommended for children ages 6 months to 2 years.
Hochul’s executive order comes as other states move to set their own vaccine policies. Last week, Florida became the first state to remove some school vaccine mandates like chickenpox and Hep B.
The governor’s executive order will be in place for at least 30 days. Washington’s governor announced he’ll join California and Oregon in launching their own West Coast Health Alliance to “uphold scientific integrity in public health.”
