Justin Fields is looking at the bigger picture after the New York Jets’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Despite Aaron Rodgers starting his Steelers tenure off with a 34-32 win over his former employers, Fields refused to be downhearted after a spirited performance.
Fields remained defiant despite the Steelers’ winGETTYThe 26-year-old didn’t make it easy on the Steelers after he completed 16-of-22 passes for 218 passing yards and one touchdown.
Fields, who signed a two-year $40 million deal with the Jets in March, oversaw history as the Jets registered zero punts in the first half the game — the first time they have done so since 1991.
So when asked about his performance, it’s no surprise that Fields was generally satisfied with it.
But his remarks went beyond just his own game, as he threw shade at the new-look Steelers.
“I’m just calling it what it is,” Fields, who spent last season with the Steelers, began in his press conference after the game.
“They acquired all these guys in the offseason. Future Hall of Famers on that side of the ball, and we put up 32.
“There were still plays that were left out there. Like I said, all we got to do is keep building, keep getting better, and we’ll be good.”
The video of Fields was posted on X and garnered over two million views and hundreds of comments from fans.
“Guess what? We put up 34. And you didn’t get it done when it mattered,” one fan posted in reply on X.
“Good game against a system he knows. When he falls back down to earth and puts up 9 points, dont be surprised,” another fan added.
Fields would have been desperate for a win against the SteelersGETTY Rodgers successfully completed his revenge missionGETTY Rodgers had the last laugh at MetLife Stadium against his former team and cupped his hears to the crows as he walked offLike Fields, Rodgers also delivered strong words after inflicting pain inside his old stomping ground.
The 41-year-old, who signed a one-year $13.5 million deal with the Steelers after leaving the Jets as a free agent, enjoyed a fine performance at MetLife Stadium.
Rodgers had four passing touchdowns and 244 yards as he completed 22 of 30 attempts, which included 4-of-5 for 62 yards.
He also had a touchdown pass to wide receiver Ben Skowronek on the Steelers’ first drive.
“There were probably people in the organization that didn’t think I could play anymore,” Rodgers said after the game.
“So, it was nice to remind those people that I still can.”
“I was happy to beat everybody associated with the Jets.”
Despite downplaying the significance of the game in the build-up, it’s clear the game meant a lot to Rodgers, who had two tumultuous years with the Jets.
The quarterback was seen cupping his ears as he walked off the field with his head coach, Mike Tomlin.
“I love beating everybody, so it doesn’t matter who it is,” Rodgers added.
“So it was nice to win, especially hearing some of the catcalls out there and the boo birds. I’m not sensitive about that. I expected that. I kind of liked that.”
