Alabama volleyball participated in the Chattanooga Classic this weekend where it went 1-1. Alabama now sits at 4-1 on the season.
Game 1: Alabama 3, Chattanooga 0
Alabama’s hot start to the season continued on Friday when the Crimson Tide swept the Mocs 3-0.
Set 1 went back and forth until Alabama was able to pull out a late 17-16 lead before winning the set 25-19. Set 2 was similar, and Alabama effectively closed out the set with two clutch service aces from Ryelle Rondo to win 25-17. In Set 3, the Crimson Tide was in complete control and never trailed, winning 25-11.
Head coach Rashinda Reed was pleased with how the team played but still said there is room for improvement.
“We’re still working through some kinks with it being preseason, but it was great to get that win in three sets,” Reed said. “We’re very aggressive from the service line, our defense today was stellar, but I would like to see us get our offense clicking a little more. But those kinds of things just take time, and I’m excited to see this team grow.”
Alabama’s defense completely shut down Chattanooga. The Crimson Tide put up 9.5 blocks while holding Chattanooga to a .059 hitting percentage. The Crimson Tide was also able to get a season high 13 service aces, compared to the Mocs four.
Game 2: Cincinnati 3, Alabama 0
Alabama suffered a defeat in Game 2 against the Cincinnati Bearcats, losing 3-0.
The Tide was down big in Set 1, losing 11-4, but was able to tie up the game at 15-15. The lead then went back and forth before the Bearcats were able to squeak out a 25-23 win. In Set 2, Alabama got out to a commanding 18-12 lead; however, the Bearcats were able to go on a 13-3 run to close out the set and win 25-21. Set 3 was a complete tossup, going deep into extra time before Cincinnati pulled out a 30-28 win.
Alabama struggled heavily on the offensive side of the ball. The team put up a total of 26 errors, while only putting up a .140 hitting percentage. The Bearcats also got a total of 13 blocks compared to the Crimson Tide’s seven.
Alabama will return to Tuscaloosa to take on Wake Forest on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. CT. Viewers can stream the game on ESPN+.
