Lisbon-Madri, SANA – Forest fires resumed in Portugal and Spain, with hundreds of firefighters trying to extinguish the flames and prevent them from reaching residential homes.
The European news website “Euractive” quoted the Portuguese Civil Protection authorities as saying: “The largest fire broke out in the “Sea” region in central Portugal, where 600 firefighters were deployed to combat the flames, which were fanned by strong winds. Several roads were also closed.” The authorities also noted that police arrested a person suspected of involvement in setting the fire.
In Spain, authorities took precautionary measures in the village of “Castromel” in the northwest of the country due to the outbreak of fires in a neighboring area that had been severely affected by a series of fires last August.
These fires continued for weeks due to a devastating wave of blazes that claimed the lives of four people and destroyed more than 300,000 hectares of forest and agricultural land, in one of the worst environmental disasters the country has witnessed in recent years.
