News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

A child was killed and four others were injured when a war remnant missile exploded in the city of Khan Sheikhoun (southern Idlib countryside).

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Hama reported that five children were taken to Hama National Hospital on Friday evening, August 5, one of whom died after the explosion near the silos area in Khan Sheikhoun.

The correspondent noted that the children had been playing in the area when the missile detonated, leaving some with severe injuries.

Residents of Khan Sheikhoun raised donations amounting to $1,200 to cover treatment costs for the injured children.

Khan Sheikhoun is located 35 kilometers from Hama, 100 kilometers from Aleppo, and 73 kilometers south of Idlib. It is administratively part of Idlib province.

Following the incident, the Syria Civil Defense  warned that landmines and war remnants pose a “serious threat” to civilians in Syria, particularly children, hindering livelihoods and the return of displaced people to their homes.

On August 24, another child was killed and his brother critically injured by a war remnant blast while herding sheep in the village of Musheirfa al-Laheeb in the Tel al-Daman area (southern Aleppo countryside). On the same day, a young man was severely wounded in the village of al-Huwayja in the al-Ghab Plain (western Hama countryside) when a war remnant exploded as he lit a fire near his home, according to the Civil Defense.

Syria has topped global rankings for landmine casualties for three consecutive years (2020, 2021, and 2022) and ranked second in 2023 after Myanmar.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented 3,521 civilian deaths from landmine explosions since the beginning of the Syrian revolution, including 931 children and 362 women, up to the end of 2024.

According to the United Nations, at least 1,000 people were killed or injured between December 2024 and June 2025, including more than 600 fatalities and over 400 injuries.

Where are they found?

Mines are spread across the Syrian landscape, particularly in areas that were frontlines of prolonged battles.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights published maps showing mine distribution across Idlib and Aleppo provinces in northern Syria, Hama in central Syria, and Damascus countryside in the south, with smaller concentrations in Deir Ezzor and other provinces.

Maisara al-Hassan, head of the engineering division in northern Syria and the Badia with the Military Operations Directorate (now the nucleus of the Ministry of Defense), told Enab Baladi that in northern Syria alone, more than 200 villages are mined, in addition to more than 260 minefields marked with warning signs and mapped to prevent civilian entry.

He explained that types of mines vary by region and stage of the war, noting that clearance teams have identified both anti-personnel and anti-tank mines.
