Swarms of people descended on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue Saturday afternoon to protest Trump’s plans to deploy federal troops to Chicago and ramp up immigration enforcement operations.
Protestors together around 5p.m. at the intersection of Ida B Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue near Chicago’s Grant Park.
The large-scale mobilization was organized by two groups, Coalition Against the Trump Agenda and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
Organizers spoke to the crowd during a rally ahead of the march down Michigan Avenue.
“Trump has spent billions on federal guards and the militarization of our community, pouring money into weapons and intimidation instead of investing in schools, hospitals, jobs and housing,” Reverend Ciera Bates-Chamberlain of Live Free Illinois said while speaking to the crowd. “He has stripped us of vital resources meant to help us live, only to use them to try to break our spirits.”
Chamberlain led protestors in a chant of “we aint free ’til we all free,” before the group began marching down Michigan Avenue.
Many protesters held signs, including some reading “No ICE, No Trump, No Troops” and “ICE out of Chicago.”
Outside the city, more than a hundred protestors mobilized outside of Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago also in opposition of the president’s crackdown on immigration and his plan to use the Naval Base for the operation.
Protestors across the Chicago area shared a similar sentiment to patrons of the Mexican Independence Day that took place in Pilsen earlier in the day Saturday, despite the looming fear of potential ice raids.
