CUBS LINEUP — The wind is blowing out to right field at Wrigley Field again today, so we might see some more fireworks this afternoon. Hopefully, the Cubs can plant more in the seats than the Nats. Here’s a look at Craig Counsell’s lineup with Matthew Boyd on the mound.

And although I have a little more on him down below, I wanted to first point out his very significant lefty/righty splits:
vsLHH: .274/.347/.489 (360 wOBA)vsRHH: .248/.300/.327 (.279 wOBA)
Counterintuitively, Lord strikes out a lot more lefties than righties, but other than that, he just gets crushed by the lefty bats — more fly balls, more hard contact, fewer grounders, more walks, etc.
And most notably, lefties have hit 9 homers off Lord, while righties have slugged just 2 in more innings.
With that in mind, it continues to stink that Kyle Tucker is out and also Owen Caissie isn’t here (yet?). That’s back-to-back games where either of them would’ve been perfect starts, both in terms of the matchup and the environmental settings.
In any case, and for the time being, Willi Castro continues to cover for Tucker in right field, Ian Happ is batting second, and Carson Kelly comes in for Reese McGuire.

Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP
I know the wind is blowing out today, so I’ll try to have some patience, but this is a pretty big start for Matthew Boyd, evaluatively speaking. Since July 28, Boyd has earned a 5.09 ERA over seven starts, and that’s including two really great games against the Orioles (7.0 scoreless) and the Blue Jays (7.0 IP, 2ER).
If things go sideways again, the Cubs might have to find a way to get him some extra rest (skipping a start maybe?) before the postseason begins. But we’ll take that one step at a time and just hope he can keep the ball on the ground and in the park this afternoon.
Boyd faced the Nationals once earlier this season, keeping them to just 2ER over 7.1 IP in early June.
Washington Nationals: Brad Lord, RHP
Brad Lord has spent time in both the rotation and bullpen this season, but has been a starter for the entire second half of the year. And although he does have two qualtiy starts in his eight second-half outings, the rest have been pretty bad: 5.82 ERA, 4.59 FIP since July 22.
And his last three games have been his worst: 17ER in 12.2 IP (yikes …).
