Community leader and political aide Mathew Gordon announced Friday that he will challenge incumbent San Diego City Councilmember Henry Foster III in District 4 in the southeastern part of the city.
Gordon was an aide to former Councilmember Myrtle Cole and later president and CEO of The Blue Heart Foundation, which helps underserved Black and Brown youth achieve academic success.
“District 4 is one of San Diego’s most diverse, resilient, and vibrant communities,” Gordon said. “But for too long, our residents have been underserved and overlooked.
“Our neighborhoods deserve the same opportunities, the same investments, and the same quality of services as any other part of the city. My Opportunity & Prosperity Agenda is designed to deliver just that.”
He proposed “data-driven solutions to improve quality of life, expand economic opportunities, and make local government more accountable to residents.” This would include new plans for key corridors, including Reo Drive, Euclid Avenue, Market Street, and the I-805 corridor.
He said his housing agenda calls for banning “junk fees,” standardizing deposits, creating security deposit payment plans, and penalizing prolonged corporate vacancies.
Born and raised in Southeast San Diego, Gordon overcame homelessness and life in a single-parent household to become a political and community leader.
Foster, former chief of staff to Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, was elected in 2024 to his first term on the council.
